What Dance Teachers Secretly Struggle With (and How to Grow Through It)
Confidence is one of those quiet things everyone assumes you have once you’re standing at the front of the room. After all, you’re the teacher, the leader, the expert, the one with all the answers. But for reals? Confidence can be one of the most complex parts of being a dance educator.
The studio is a place filled with artistry, emotion, and unspoken expectations. You’re not just teaching movement, you’re managing energy, guiding young hearts, and balancing your own perfectionism while helping others grow. And in that mix, confidence can waver, even for the most seasoned teachers.
Common Confidence Challenges in Dance Education
Over the years, I’ve seen and personally experienced just how layered these challenges can be:
Imposter Syndrome: Feeling like you’re not truly qualified, even with years of training and experience.
Perfectionism & Self-Doubt: Setting impossibly high standards and offering yourself less grace than you give your students.
Comparison: Measuring your value by another teacher’s choreography, class size, or recognition.
Fear of Failure or Judgment: Holding back creative ideas because you’re afraid of what others might think.
Overwhelm: Trying to balance choreography, communication, lesson plans, costuming, and emotional support... all at once and not to mention family life.
Lack of Support or Resources: Feeling isolated or uncertain about where to find professional growth.
Body Image Insecurity: Working in an industry that sometimes values appearance over artistry.
Unclear Feedback: Doubting your effectiveness when feedback is inconsistent or vague.
Parent & Student Pressures: Managing high expectations while striving to maintain peace, balance, and joy.
If any of these sound familiar, you’re not alone. These struggles don’t make you a bad teacher... they make you human. But just because we feel things, doesn't mean we have to stay there.
Rediscovering the Joy in Teaching
At LMK, my mission is to help dance educators move through these challenges with confidence, compassion, and community. I believe teaching dance can be so much more than choreography; it’s an opportunity to shape confidence, character, and joy in the next generation...and even for YOU!
Through my courses, resources, coaching and personalized training - I help teachers rebuild their confidence from the inside out. I offer practical tools and reflective prompts to help you lead with calm authority, creative freedom, and renewed purpose. You can choose to go quickly or take your time.
Because at the end of the day, confidence isn’t about having it all together. It’s about remembering why you started, showing up with your passion and compassion, and trusting that what you’re doing matters deeply.
